Château Giscours

Giscours has a long and rich history, which can be traced back to the fourteenth century at which time it was a defensive tower overlooking a wild and inhospitable region. The real beginning of the château came in 1552, when Pierre de L'homme, a wealthy Bordeaux draper, bought a nobleman’s house called “Guyscoutz” and proceeded to turn it into a vast estate and planted the first vines. Wine production was launched and each of the rich merchant’s successors made their own contribution to this magnificent building. It was in the nineteenth century under the Pescatore and Cruse families that Giscours gained much of its finery: the château was transformed into neoclassical palace.
Giscours continues to shine, evidence of investment from the Albada Jelgersma family and a better understadning of their 100 ha of vines that unusually for Bordeaux, sits in a single block (almost) surrounded by forest and pasture. This 2023 is powerful, rich and complex, layered with notes of boiled blackcurrants, decadent kirsch and fresh plum and supported by restrained tannins that are structured and firming on the finish. The acidity is well balanced and frames the fruit perfectly. The finish is elegant and polished.
Enjoy with braised ox cheek with a red wine sauce and roasted sweet potato.
Harvest dates: 6th September - 5th October. Yields of 31hl/ha. Aged in 50% new oak for 12-16 months. Alc 13.5%.
