Home of Malbec, Llamas, oddly Spanish in temperament and sometimes notable for fisticuffs in the South Atlantic, we recognise Argentina as one of the great red wine countries of the World, especially for dark scented, robust, fruit-filled and delicious Malbec. A country of extremes - very high summer temperatures in the wine capital region of Mendoza, some of the highest vineyards in the world, with vines planted in excess of 3,000m high in the permanently snow-capped Andes, and a very export focused wine industry, with over 87% of all wine produced exported, extending into over 125 countries.
Grape varieties are varied and mainly international, with Malbec most planted, followed by Cabernet, Syrah, Bonarda and Tempranillo for reds. The white wines are produced from grapes such as Torrontes, Pais, Chardonnay and Muscat. Soils are varied across the many regions of Argentina, with the climate suitably varied, mainly Continental and warm, but coolness comes from proximity to either water or altitude. Summer snow melt gives much needed water to maintain healthy vine growing in the heat of their summer.
