The Sociando-Mallet – a property neither Classified nor Bourgeois – delivers Classed-Growth-level Claret from its modest Haut-Médoc appellation.

Château Sociando-Mallet

Sociando-Mallet commands a solid reputation in today’s wine market. It sits - voluntarily - outside of Bordeaux’s classification system, choosing instead to call itself simply, Haut-Médoc. Its owner - Jean Gautreau, opted not to include it in the Médoc classifications, but this has done nothing to deter its loyal following. When he purchased the estate in 1969 it was in a sad state but he recognised the quality of its land and spent the next half century increasing the size of its holdings from 8 hectares to 110 hectares, 80 of which are now planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, The gravel soils are reminiscent of those found at Pichon-Lalande or Léoville-Las-Cases and Sociando-Mallet a...
A deep purple in colour with , on the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet dominated by layers of ripe black fruits, cooked and candied, accompanied by the scents of undergrowth, cut herbs and vanilla. On tasting, the fruit is balanced with sweet clove spice, dark chocolate, cassis, leather and wild berry fruits that linger into the finish. Chateau Sociando-Mallet 2018 is characterized by its full-bodied and powerful concentration that equally refreshes you with its delicate mineral touch.

Born from an exceptional terroir of 82 hectares, north of Pauillac, on the hill of Baleyron, which is composed of Güntz gravel, clay and a deep clay-limestone subsoil, the wines of Château Sociando-Mallet reflect the rich mosaic of soils, which also serves to regulate consistency. The Château Sociando-Mallet 2018 was produced with the advice of oenologist Michel-Bernard Couasnon and is composed of a blend of 66% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. After harvesting in crates and sorting both before and after de-stemming, this Bordeaux red wine was vinified in thermo-regulated inert vats and then aged 90% in new barrels.
