Founded by Irishman Bernard Phélan and then developed by his son, Frank, Château has been one of the benchmarks of the Ste-Estephe appellation since the 19th Century. Bordering Château Montrose and Château Calon-Ségur, it is situated on well drained gravel soils and produces wonderful claret.

Château Phelan Sugur

This 66ha property is a consistent producer of classic St. Estèphe – solid, structured and long-lived. It is situated very close to both Château Montrose and Château Calon-Ségur, so in rather good company! Purchased by Xavier Gardinier in 1985 it is now run by his sons, Thierry and Laurent.

2021 yielded only 32hl/ha with the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon ever, accounting for 75% of the blend. An attractive fresh bouquet with notes of raspberry and red cherry and a lovely fragrance of rose petals. The palate is deep and finely constructed, punching well above its station, with fresh cassis fruits, a hint of tobacco and forest floor, all supported by finely polished tannins.
A perfect partner for roast rack of lamb served pink.
A yield of 30hl/ha, ageing is in 500l oak barrels and stainless steel tanks for 18 months.
