Organic wines are produced from organically grown grapes in accordance with the principles of organic farming, which typically excludes the use of artificial chemical fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides, and with as little sulphur dioxide as possible. Organic wine must be certified in its country of origin as proof of the stringent measures that protect the wine’s natural production.
What makes wine organic?
For a wine to be classed as an organic wine it must be produced without any artificial chemicals and be certified in its country of origin. Organic farmers encourage biodiversity by introducing beneficial insects to their crop or by grazing sheep nearby to fend off any damaging insects. This encourages the vineyard to naturally self-regulate and eliminates the need for any artificial soil cultivation or pesticide usage.
Many organic wines are also lower in sulphur dioxide. For example, in Australia, the sulphur dioxide limit in standard wine is 300 parts per million, whereas in organic wine it is 150ppm. This can help reduce the impact of a hangover.
