Bodega Santa Rosa, Zuccardi

Santa Rosa is the original wine estate established by Zuccardi, an hour’s drive south east of Mendoza in Argentina. There is a progressive move to organic farming with 50% of the 500ha estate now converted. Such are the desert conditions, evaporation is strong and without irrigation the vines would die very quickly. There is a large difference in temperature between night and day which ensures the grapes maintain a wonderful freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand, gently pressed and then fermented in stainless steel tanks at 16-18 ° C. There is a short 4-6 hour maceration resulting in a very pretty Provencal salmon pink colour, a welcome relief from the heavier South American roses on the market.
Classic fine structure and texture of a good Malbec with delicate floral notes, grapefruit, ripe peach and pear flavours with a hint of spice. A balanced wine with great finesse in aromas and flavours.
A lovely wine served with salads, chicken and spicy Thai or Indian Cuisine
The grapes are all machine picked, being sourced from across the Mendoza region, and this wine in particular uses younger vines where acidity and fruit are higher than for simple red Malbec. Immediate de-stemming and sorting, then pneumatic pressing to prevent pigmentation. 15 days of fermentation in stainless steel tanks at 10° C before a few months on fine lees in tank to settle the wine. Filtered then bottled.

Graham Holter,Wine Merchant Magazine, October 2023: 'From an outpost of the Zuccardi empire Mendoza, this isn't going to win any awards for label design. But the contents of the bottle provided pretty decent entertainment for the money on a July evening when the win and rain were taking a deserved breather. Lots of character, with flowers and peaches and a little bit of spice in the mix'.
