Created in 1948, Ortega is a fairly young grape grown in Germany. Originally a cross between Müller-Thurgau and Siegerrebe, it was named after the Spanish poet and philosopher José Ortega y Gasset. As it ripens early, Ortega survives well in colder climates, which is why it is one of the few European grapes able to be grown in England successfully. Because of its sweet and musty flavour, Ortega is often also used as a table grape, although Ortega wines are aromatic and often have floral notes and a fruity flavour, with notes of berries and peach.
