Nero d’Avola is one of Italy's most important indigenous varieties, most widely planted in Sicily, having originally been grown on the southern tip, Alba, but having now spread northwards. This grape is well known for producing lovely, dark, spicy, plum and chocolate flavoured wines, which have great body, are rich in colour and have long aging potential, particularly when oaked. In fact, it is often compared to New World Shirazes, with its sweet tannins and spicy flavours, which are gained by the hot climates the Nero D’Avola vines enjoy and need in order to produce fully ripe grapes. It also contributes to Marsala blends and more recently, Nero D’Avola has been planted in Mendocino County, California.
