Montepulciano is a flavourful red grape planted in central and southern Italy, particularly in Abruzzo, with one of the most popular wines it makes being named Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Because it ripens late, the Montelpulciano grape is rarely found in northern Italy, and has a tendency to be lighter coloured and bitter if it is harvested too early. Montepulciano wines are usually deeply coloured, acidic and flavourful.
