Grenache or Garnacha is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world. It ripens late, so it needs hot, dry conditions such as those found in Spain, where the grape most likely originated. Grenache is the dominant variety in most Southern Rhône wines, especially in Châteauneuf-du-Pape where it is typically over 80% of the blend. In the Languedoc it plays a major role in many blends and is also responsible for much of the Rosé wine from Southern France. Known as Garnacha Tinta in Spain where it is the most extensively red wine grape grown, it is blended with Tempranillo in Rioja. Wonderful Garnacha wines come from Priorat in Catalonia, where fruit from old Garnacha bush is used. Also in Australia, the best examples can be found in the Barossa Valley from old Grenache vines.
