Puglia is “the heel” of the boot of peninsular Italy, bordered by the Adriatic and Ionian Seas which give it one of the longest coastlines of any region in Italy. Puglia is also one of the most fertile regions in all of Italy. The most popular grape grown in the Puglia region of eastern Italy is Primitivo, which, grown in the rich red clay and sand soils of Puglia, produces some of the finest red wines in the area. The heat and fertile soil in the region make for a terroir in which almost anything can be grown, ranging from sweet, aromatic grapes full of fruity flavourings and notes to dark, deep and flavourful grapes.
