Gigondas was granted its own appellation as recently as 1971, breaking away from Côtes du Rhône Villages due to the increased quality of its red wines. Split evenly by the mighty Dentelless de Montmirail mountain ridge, a spectacular ragged, torn ridge of rock that just high above the edge of the Luberon Valley, and with the majority of vineyards grown above 500m, the red wines of Gigondas have become synonymous with the same level of quality and robust flavours as neighbouring Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Whilst a very small amount of rose wine is produced, the appellation is viewed as a mainly red wine region, with Grenache used up to a maximum of 80%, the remainder being Syrah, Mourvèdre and small elements of Carignan. The style of wine is big, rich and peppery, with the warmth and raised alcohol of the red Grenache showing through, and as a wine it will cellar for 4-15 years depending on the grower.
