A large region set within the heartland of the Mid Loire, comprising around 70 communes spread through 13,500 hectares of vineyards which sit astride the Loire. The region is synonymous with crisp dry whites, with Sauvignon Blanc the principle grape for whites, along with Chenin Blanc, Arbois and some Chardonnay (used mainly for sparkling). Red wines are produced from from Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Gamay, Cot (Malbec) and Cabernet Sauvignon. The red wines tend to be fresh, with obvious tannins and earthy dark fruits when young and they retain an acidity and freshness throughout their lives.
