Wines from Anjou

The region of Anjou, more often linked with Saumur, is often described as the Loire in miniature, as within its boundaries lies every style, grape, climate and method of production, varying from searingly dry whites to heavy reds, sparkling, sweet, medium dry, rose and every variants of all the above in between. Situated outside the city of Angers, its limestone, Tufa and clay soils are planted with many grapes, the most common being Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc for whites, with varying plantings of Gamay, Cabernet Franc, Grolleau ( for rose and light red ), as well as some Pinot Noir. The tributaries of the Loire River, the Aubance and the Layon, are the epicentre of fine sweet wine production, with Botrytis prevalent in the humid conditions.
