A small, red-wine only region in the Libourne area of Bordeaux, adjoining St Emilion and planted on similar clay and gravel-dominated vineyards. Now producing some of the most expensive and sought after wines in Bordeaux, (Petrus, La Fleur Petrus, Vieux Château Certan, L'Evangile) Pomerol gained AOC status in 1936, and uses the Merlot grape predominantly, with a small and varying percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blends. The indistinct hamlet of Pomerol is lost within the jumble of small vineyards and hidden Châteaux, and comprises just 800 ha, with the average vineyard holding being just 4 hectares.
