Colin Hugo commenced planting vines in this McLaren Vale vineyard in 1950, but it was not until 1970 when his son, John, joined the business, that they considered producing their own wines. Having the choice of several established varietals, planted on the 30ha estate, it was the Shiraz that John finally selected for his first vintage, in 1979. Since this point Hugo wines have only gone from strength to strength, winning numerous awards along the way. The focus for John has been to maintain a consistent level of quality, in all the wines that they produce. Owning the vineyard has provided greater control over the development of the fruit and allows John to keep a watchful eye on each stage of production.
